Why TiN filter?
A metal filter system was developed as a permanent alternative to the paper filter in order to deliver the best tasting coffee. Due to its absorbent properties, paper filters remove most oils and fats from the liquid being filtered. This means that brewing colloids (flavour carriers in the coffee) as well as coffee grounds are retained in the filter.
However, when using a filter made from an inert metal (like Golden Titanium, TiN), the solids are separated mechanically from the liquid by the micro pores, allowing the brewing colloids to pass through. This is the reason TiN plating (via PVD, physical vapour deposition) was used; it is chemically neutral (inert), ensuring all flavour components end up in your coffee cup.
Latest Technology
The metal filter itself is made by using technology similar to that used in computer circuitry, micro- and nano- filters. Physical vapour deposition technology is then used to plate the stainless steel filter with titanium nitride. This results in micro pores so fine that you’ll experience next to no coffee sediment in the bottom of your coffee cup. All the while preserving the pure, original flavour of the coffee by filtering through the inert TiN. By cleaning the filter in your usual dishwashing manner your filter stays hygienically clean for years and ready for use at any time.
Filter Product History
The first product developed was the conical/cone shaped gold-plated filter. This was designed to replace paper for use in most brands of 6-12 cup coffee filter machines or ‘dripolators/percolators’. This was followed by a one-cup gold-plated filter design by Swissgold in the 1980s before they developed the current Coffee For One design in 1995.
Due to its convex shaped filter and diameter, it is suitable to sit on top of most cup/mug sizes, just pour enough hot water in at the top to suit the size of the cup underneath.
Harris Coffee introduced the Swissgold Coffee For One to Australia circa 1999-2000. Due to the rising price of gold in 2023, the 23-karat gold plating transitioned to titanium nitride (TiN) which actually provides superior properties to gold in the brewing of coffee.
One Cup Filter History
The one-cup coffee filter is the 21st Century version of the 20th Century full metal one-cup coffee filter systems of Northern Europe. Metal filter technology has a long tradition in coffee making and in one form or another is the basis behind other coffee making styles such as Cafetiere/French Press/Plunger, Stovetop Espresso and Espresso Machine.
